Utah's Duchesne County is located on the south slope and foothills of the longest east-west mountain range in the continental United States, known as the High Uintah's. Located between Denver and Salt Lake City, the County's scenic attractions and unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities attract thousands of visitors. The High Uintah Wilderness, including its many rivers, streams, and lakes, and the western end of the mineral-rich Roan and Book Cliff mountains are located within short driving distances from county locations. The rich history and culture of the area is evident throughout the county. Many amenities are available, such as the outstanding 18-hole golf course in Roosevelt City and Starvation State Park Reservoir near the community of Duchesne, offering 3,500 acres of fishing and boating. The Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation lies within and adjacent to the county boundaries, and there are many joint ventures between county and tribal governments. Duchesne County is the western most county in Northeastern Utah and is bordered by Uintah County on the east. It encompasses an area of 3,238 square miles, or 3.94 percent of the state's area. Elevations range from 4,251 to 13,528 feet at Kings Peak ( the highest point in the state). Fifty-four percent of the county land base is managed by state and federal government agencies; 27 percent is private, and 18 percent is part of the Uintah & Ouray Indian Reservation. Highways US 191, and US 40, and three State Roads provide excellent access to the county's communities and resources, and adjacent areas located in Wyoming, Colorado, and the Salt Lake City area. Duchesne County Solicits and Assists New Business and Industry Through Proactive Economic Development Programs As with the other two counties in northeastern Utah, the economy has experienced slow but steady growth since the mid-1980's. Several organizations exist to help local businesses and industry; including the Duchesne County Area Chamber of Commerce, Uintah Basin Association of Governments, Utah State University Branch Campus, Uintah Basin Applied Technology Center. These centers assist those looking for financing or help developing a financial plan for existing start-up business. Growth Industries Manufacturing, construction, and trade industries have grown steadily during this time. Growth in the other industries has remained constant, with a slight decrease in the oil and gas industry. There has been a constant increase in the economic indicators, sales tax, housing, occupancy, and employment. The majority of power needs is provided by Moon Lake Electric Association. Utah Power serves a small area in the southern part of the county. Natural Gas and Propane Services Questar Gas Company provides gas service to homes, businesses and industries in the Duchesne, Roosevelt, and Altamont areas, and operates and manages transmission pipelines in the county area. Several propane companies service county areas where natural gas distribution lines have yet to be constructed. Public Water Supply and Waste Water Disposal Irrigation is the largest single use of water in Duchesne county and is under management of the Moon Lake Water Users Association. Duchesne County has 26 regulated water systems managed by water improvement districts, special service districts, or municipalities. Current water supplies in the county will meet moderate to moderately heavy residential and business growth. Supplies come from a combination of springs and canal systems associated with high mountain and local area reservoirs. City sewers are installed in all incorporated communities. Telephones/Telecommunications Telephone service is provided by US West Communications and Uintah Basin Telecommunication Association. Cellular and internet services are also provided by the association, under the name UBET Cellular, UBET Wireless, and UBTA Net Internet & Network Services. Ameri-Net Business Solutions is providing Internet service and other telecommunication services. Cellular One provides cellular service. In addition, a cooperative effort is underway between these carriers to install and operate a fiber-optic system in the county, based on established priority needs. Cable television services are available in the Duchesne and Roosevelt areas; while satellite dish services are also available throughout the county. Professional Medical Services The Uintah Basin Medical Center mission is to Achieve excellence in providing a broad range of services and personal and cost-effective patient care. The center is a 42-bed acute care medical facility with 15 full-time, three mid-level and five visiting specialists. The center offers more healthcare options than any other rural hospital in the state. A full range of diagnostic imaging, 24-hour emergency care, and numerous specialty capabilities are provided. Six ambulances serve the county area. EMT's are certified by the State of Utah and are highly trained and qualified to respond to all types of emergencies. Transportation Duchesne County has excellent state and county highway access. The County Road Department is constantly planning and improving road systems in conjunction with the Utah State Department of Transportation. The objective is to provide well designed and maintained access to communities and reasonable access to important county resources.
